The Staircase
In the realm of interior design, staircases hold a unique and essential role in shaping the overall aesthetic and functionality of a home. Serving as both a practical and visually impactful element, staircases contribute significantly to the architectural beauty and spatial dynamics of a space.
Our first featured staircase (above) is clearly the architectural focal point in this Mount Pleasant, Calgary home. We designed a beautiful mono stringer staircase with floating oak stairs balanced by bold walnut balustrade. The sculptural metal slat wall allows light into the space and works as a room divider between the staircase and living room.
The staircase in our St. Andrews Modern home again features a slat wall, this time in a warm wood tone that ties into the rest of the home’s millwork. It serves as a partition between the sitting room and the staircase and allows light to permeate the rooms promoting a light and airy quality.
While hardwood stairs are beautiful, there is always the concern of slipping. Here on our Park Views project we inset carpet on the stairs and accented with wood on each side. This gives the illusion, and safety, of a carpeted stair runner, but also the elegance of a custom design.
In our Canmore Mountain house project, a glass partition is used to separate the staircase from the adjoining corridor. Functionally, this allows light to infiltrate both spaces while also reinforcing the floating staircase as an ethereal focal point.
This traditional staircase incorporates beautiful details which coordinate perfectly with this Briar Hill home’s character such as a carpeted stair runner, a warm wood handrail and wood stair tread. The custom wall paneling provides personality on an otherwise blank wall while mirroring the detailing of the main floor tray ceiling.
In conclusion, the staircase is not merely a functional element within a home but a design opportunity to create a striking visual impact, enhance spatial flow, and infuse personality into the living space. By recognizing the significance of staircases in interior design, homeowners and designers alike can harness their potential to elevate the overall aesthetic and functionality of a home.
